This census meeting in West Bengal sounds like one of those government stories which looks routine from outside, but actually has lot of political tension sitting inside it . Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is set to lead meeting today at state secretariat,Nabanna, and main aim is to speed up census process in state .
And this is coming after cabinet decision made on May 11 to commence census . That part matters because census work had reportedly faced big delays under previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee . So obviously, this is not just paperwork now,it has also become political blame game.
Adhikari has criticised previous government for not cooperating with Union Home Ministry, and according to him, that non-cooperation contributed to delay in starting census process . Whether people agree or not, this kind of allegation will definitely keep issue heated .
But on ground level, meeting is expected to review how much preparatory work has actually moved . State government has already given responsibilities to various officials, including divisional commissioners and district magistrates,to help with census work.
Few things likely to get focus in this meeting:
- Staff recruitment and training for carrying out census properly.
- Digital data collection methods,including online self-enumeration.
- Coordination with Union government for smoother census execution.
And honestly, staff part is not small thing ah . Census sounds simple when said in one line, but it needs trained people going house to house, collecting correct details, checking errors and making sure data does not become messy .
There is also talk about using special mobile application for collecting information from residents during door-to-door visits . This app may also allow self-enumeration,where residents submit their own details online and get unique 'self-enumeration ID' for verification.
But digital method also brings its own questions . Will everyone be able to use online option easily? Will officials have enough training? Will rural areas and older citizens manage without confusion? These are practical issues only, not just tech excitement.
Directorate of Census Operations in West Bengal has been stressing need for efficient data collection, and state government now wants to move past earlier hurdles . Still, today’s meeting at Nabanna will show whether this is actually moving fast on ground or just another round of official planning…
