This West Bengal Advocate General change feels like more than routine legal appointment only . Senior Advocate Surojit Nath Mitra has officially been appointed as new Advocate General of West Bengal, and timing is what makes whole thing interesting .
He is taking over from Kishore Datta, who resigned on May 5 following recent Assembly elections . And honestly, when such post changes hands right after heated political phase, people will obviously read between lines ah.
Notification came from Principal Secretary of state's judicial department, confirming Mitra's appointment effective from afternoon of May 29 . Mitra comes with over four decades of experience in civil and commercial law,so on paper at least, experience side looks strong.
But this is not happening in quiet atmosphere . Kishore Datta had served as Advocate General twice during Trinamool Congress regime, and his resignation came around period of political unrest in state, especially after post-poll violence surrounding 2021 Assembly elections .
And tbh, this is where legal post starts looking political also .
Datta was seen as close ally of outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee . So naturally, his exit has opened space for new legal face at time when West Bengal is already under pressure from different sides and opposition scrutiny is not going away soon .
Few things standing out clearly in this appointment:
- Senior Advocate Surojit Nath Mitra has over four decades of experience in civil and commercial law .
- Kishore Datta resigned on May 5 after recent Assembly elections.
- Appointment was confirmed effective from afternoon of May 29 through state judicial department notification.
Now Mitra will have to handle state’s legal matters at very sensitive time . Court cases, political controversies, allegations from opposition parties,post-election questions… all this will not wait just because new Advocate General has come in .
And honestly, this role is not just about arguing law in court . In West Bengal’s current mood,Advocate General’s office can influence how state responds to pressure, how legal strategy is shaped, and how government handles criticism .
Mitra may bring calm legal mind into situation, but politics around him will not be calm . Whether this appointment becomes smooth transition or another flashpoint in Bengal’s already tense setup… that part is still hanging…
