This is one of those issues which may not look dramatic on surface, but honestly,it hits very hard when you think about students involved . Digvijaya Singh, prominent Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, has now appealed to state government to reopen hostels and ashrams meant for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students .
And these are not some random buildings lying closed . These facilities have reportedly been closed since 2016,and they were giving accommodation and educational support to thousands of underprivileged children . That gap of so many years is not small thing ah.
In letter addressed to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav,Singh highlighted how marginalized students have been deprived of educational opportunities because these institutions stayed shut . For many children, hostel or ashram is not extra support,it is basic condition for continuing studies only.
The larger point he made is also uncomfortable . These hostels and ashrams were designed to help Scheduled Caste and Tribal students enter mainstream education and build better future . When such support disappears, privileged students somehow manage, but disadvantaged groups fall further behind.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Thousands of children remain without access to educational resources due to closures.
- Ashrams were established to help marginalized students succeed academically.
- Reopening would address educational disparities in Madhya Pradesh.
Singh also referred to concerns raised by Jawar Singh Agarwal, the State head of the Ashram Teachers’ Association, who has been pushing for reopening of these institutions for long time . And honestly, when teachers’ side is also raising same concern,it shows issue is not just political statement .
He described situation as “deeply unjust,” and that phrase feels quite fitting here . Because if hostels and ashrams are closed, students lose not just rooms or meals, but also connection to government welfare schemes and proper educational support.
But now question is whether Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and state government will actually act quickly . Singh has expressed confidence that government, led by principles of social justice, would respond positively to appeal, but parents and students have already waited since 2016.
The letter has again started public discussion on inclusive education in Madhya Pradesh . Many observers feel reopening these hostels and ashrams could help bridge social and educational disparities, but until doors actually open again, this remains just another promise hanging in air…
