This Mizoram power review meeting may sound like routine government work, but honestly, issue behind it is not small thing ah . Electricity dues, smart meters, prepaid billing… all this directly affects how stable power supply can actually stay.
Union Minister for Power,Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar held meeting in Mizoram with focus on planning and recovery of electricity dues . Main concern was around challenges faced by state's Power and Electricity Department, especially when energy demand is rising across India.
And Khattar was quite clear that officials need stronger steps for full recovery of electricity dues . Because if money is not coming back properly, power supply system itself starts getting pressure from all sides.
One big point was smart meters in government buildings and major commercial establishments . Khattar said smart meters help in accurate billing and tracking energy use better. He also proposed security deposit system under prepaid metering programme, which is expected to improve revenue collection and reduce losses.
Few things standing out from meeting:
- Smart meter installation progress is still at only 18.01% of targeted coverage in Mizoram.
- Hydroelectric project discussions are happening for Tlawng,Tuivai, and Chhimtuipui rivers.
- Khattar assured continued support for Swachh Bharat Mission and solid waste management systems.
During interaction with Mizoram's Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation,K. Sapdanga,Khattar again talked about need for proper planning in power conservation and generation . He also said electricity drives economic growth, and government is looking at renewable energy options, especially solar energy,to meet Mizoram's growing demand.
And tbh, smart meter part is where people may have mixed feelings . On one side, accurate billing and prepaid system can reduce leakages . But on other side, consumers will want proper transparency also, because prepaid electricity can feel strict if rollout is not handled carefully.
Under Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS),work is going on to strengthen state's power distribution grid . So far,52,886 smart meters have already been installed, and Power and Electricity Department is moving consumers towards prepaid metering system, starting with departmental offices only.
But bigger question is still there… if smart meters, revenue recovery, hydro projects and solar plans all move slowly, how fast can Mizoram actually catch up with its growing power needs…
