So I just saw this news about India-UK trade talks and it feels like things are moving forward again . Union Minister Piyush Goyal met with UK's trade secretary Peter Kyle on June 2, 2026, to discuss economic stuff.
Goyal even posted on social media about it,saying, "Delighted to welcome my friend,UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade,Peter Kyle, and his delegation to India." Always nice to see this friendly tone in high-level meetings ah.
And this discussion is basically to figure out the "next phase" of economic partnership . This comes after that big India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement,or CETA, that was signed back in July 2025.
So it's not a new thing,just building on what's already there .
But honestly, the bigger picture here is India's whole strategy with these free trade agreements (FTAs) . The numbers are actually quite surprising when you look at them .
Apparently India's trade with its FTA partner countries has gone up by 92% between FY21 and FY25 . That's huge compared to overall merchandise trade growth which was 41.5% in same period .
Few things to note from all this:
- Trade with FTA partners surged by 92% between FY21 and FY25 .
- India currently has nine FTAs in place covering 38 different countries.
- Goyal is also pushing for more balanced and responsive World Trade Organization (WTO).
And tbh, this WTO point is very important . He stressed that it needs to listen to concerns of developing and least developed nations . It's not just about making deals with big economies, but making sure the global system is fair for everyone.
This shows India is thinking about its role on world stage, not just one-to-one country deals .
So while meeting with Peter Kyle is main headline, it's part of this larger plan to expand trade partnerships everywhere . Let's see how these high-level talks actually translate to real benefits on ground…
