Okay so one after another,Trinamool councillors are getting arrested in West Bengal . The list is just getting longer and honestly,it’s hard to keep track of who is accused of what now .
The latest case is of Sachin Singh,who is a Trinamool councillor for Ward 36 . Kolkata Police arrested him on June 2 on charges of extortion from his residence in Narkeldanga.
But this arrest was not quiet one . Apparently local residents started protesting when police came,saying the councillor was involved in threatening his political opponents . So it’s all very messy .
And this Sachin Singh is not new to controversy ah . Reports say he's also linked to post-poll violence cases from back in 2021,the year he first won his KMC election seat . He is now scheduled to appear before Sealdah court.
And tbh,this isn't just one isolated incident.
Just on May 23,another councillor Sudip Polle from Ward 123 was also taken into custody for extortion . And then there is the Asansol case which is even more shocking.
In Asansol,they arrested Tarun Chakraborty,the councillor for Ward 87 . Police actually recovered government relief packages meant for the poor from his home . On top of that,he is also accused of being involved in illegal sand mining and taking money for housing project assistance.
Few things standing out from this whole wave of arrests:
- Sachin Singh,Kolkata councillor,arrested on June 2 for extortion.
- This follows the May 23 arrest of another councillor,Sudip Polle,on similar charges.
- In Asansol,councillor Tarun Chakraborty was caught hoarding relief supplies for poor .
The West Burdwan police confirmed that most of the items they seized were meant for underprivileged people only . This whole thing started after BJP formed government in the state,and since then,many Trinamool Congress leaders have been arrested over last month.
Lalbazar headquarters is saying that police are targeting anti-social elements no matter their political party . But you know how these things are. It’s always difficult to tell what is genuine clean-up and what is political rivalry.
So many arrests happening so fast… makes you wonder if this is just tip of the iceberg or something else entirely…
