This NBA update may sound like regular government finance news at first, but actually there is something interesting happening here . National Biodiversity Authority ( NBA ) has realized ₹21.26 crore under Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism during financial year 2025-26,and honestly, this is not small thing ah .
Basic idea is simple . Industries using India’s biological resources for research, commercial use or intellectual property rights have to share benefits from that use . And this ₹21.26 crore has come mainly from approvals linked to those activities.
What stands out is seed sector clearly leading this collection . Seed sector alone contributed ₹11.75 crore, which is more than half of amount realized this year . AYUSH sector came next with ₹5.56 crore.
Other sectors also came in,but at smaller level . Nutraceuticals contributed ₹1.40 crore and pharmaceuticals contributed ₹1.18 crore . So yes, this is not just one industry story, even if seed sector is sitting right at top .
- Seed sector contributed ₹11.75 crore to ABS fund.
- AYUSH sector followed with ₹5.56 crore, while nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals added ₹1.40 crore and ₹1.18 crore.
- Around 300 biological resources were involved, from maize and rice to turmeric and ashwagandha.
And tbh,the part I find most important is where this money is supposed to go . ABS mechanism is meant to make sure benefits from biological resources are shared fairly with local communities, traditional knowledge holders,Biodiversity Management Committees and farmers .
As of now,NBA has collected total ₹266 crore from users of biological resources . Out of that,₹145 crore has already been disbursed to beneficiaries across country . That number matters because without actual disbursal, this whole system would remain just paperwork only .
This mechanism comes under Biological Diversity Act,and it connects India’s local biodiversity system with bigger commitments like Convention on Biological Diversity and Nagoya Protocol . Sounds technical, but at ground level it is about whether people who protect and know these resources actually get something back .
And this is where question becomes bigger than money . India has biological wealth everywhere, from crops to medicinal plants, but who gets credit, who gets payment, and who gets left out in name of development…
Because ₹21.26 crore is good news, but real test is whether farmer, local community and knowledge holder actually feel this benefit in their own life or not…
