On May 30, 2026,Shekhar Kapur and Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman unveiled plans for sequel to beloved 1983 film 'Masoom',and title itself is 'Masoom: New Generation'.
This is not just random sequel news also . Original 'Masoom' still has emotional weight even after 43 years since its release, and songs like 'Lakdi Ki Kathi' and 'Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi' are still remembered like family memories only.
The new film is being described as contemporary reimagining, with focus on modern themes of identity, family, love, and migration . And that actually makes sense, because family structures, societal norms and relationships have changed so much since 1983.
Shekhar Kapur also said something which explains why he wants to return to this world: “For a long time,I have felt that themes of Masoom deserved to be revisited through the lens of today’s world.” And tbh, that line itself tells what this film is trying to do .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- 'Masoom: The New Generation' will explore identity, family, love, and migration.
- Shekhar Kapur and A.R. Rahman are reuniting for this project.
- Cast includes Naseeruddin Shah,Shabana Azmi,Manoj Bajpayee,Nithya Menen,and Kaveri Kapur.
A.R. Rahman is not just composing score here, but also serving as co-producer . He said,“There’s something timeless about Masoom, and reinterpreting that emotional world for new generation feels both exciting and necessary.” Coming from Rahman, this feels like film may carry big emotional music energy again .
And cast is definitely serious ah . Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi returning around this universe already brings nostalgia, and then Manoj Bajpayee,Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur add completely new texture to story. Original film had Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah alongside child actors Urmila Matondkar and Jugal Hansraj,so comparison will naturally happen .
Right now,'Masoom: New Generation' is in pre-production and is slated to begin filming later this year, with global theatrical release planned for 2026 . That means audience still has to wait, but expectations have already started building.
But remaking or reimagining something as loved as Masoom is never simple . People want same emotional honesty, but not copy-paste nostalgia… and that balance is where real test will begin.
