Key Takeaways

  • Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls begins
  • House-to-house visits to ensure voter inclusion
  • Draft rolls to be published on July 5

Election Commission of India (ECI) starting Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Manipur,Mizoram, and Sikkim may sound like routine voter list work, but honestly, this is not small thing ah . Voter rolls decide who gets counted and who gets left out,so any mistake here can create real mess during upcoming elections.

On June 1,2026,the ECI launched this month-long SIR exercise in Northeastern states of Manipur ,Mizoram , and Sikkim . Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will now go door-to-door and check details of electors so electoral rolls become more accurate and inclusive.

And this process will continue until June 28 . After that, draft electoral rolls are supposed to be published on July 5 . Before sending BLOs into field, the ECI also gave training to all BLOs at district level,so they know how to handle forms, updates and corrections properly.

According to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Arun Kumar Sinha, main aim is to include all eligible citizens in electoral rolls, remove names of deceased people and fix wrong voter information . That part sounds basic, but in real life these errors create major headache for voters.

Sinha also said,“Electors are requested to provide last SIR information and details relating to themselves or their relatives,” and this line basically puts public cooperation at centre of whole exercise . Because BLOs can visit every house, but if people don’t give correct details, then list will still remain messy only.

Few key points standing out in this SIR exercise:

  • House-to-house visits will be done by Booth Level Officers (BLOs),with partially filled Enumeration Forms given to existing electors for updates.
  • Draft electoral rolls will be released on July 5 after revision process ends .
  • Political parties will take part through Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to keep public involvement visible.

And July 1 has been fixed as qualifying date for this revision process in these three states . That means eligibility will be checked with that date in mind, which matters for young voters and others whose details may need updating.

ECI Secretary Binod Kumar also recently reviewed preparations for SIR exercise in Mizoram . He asked officials to do their duties diligently and transparently, which is fair because voter list work can easily become controversial if people feel names are being added or removed carelessly .

The ECI is also trying to address procedural challenges faced by officials and give guidance wherever needed,so electoral database stays reliable . This whole thing is part of nationwide effort to improve accuracy and trust in voter lists before elections.

But actual test will happen on ground only, when BLOs knock on doors, people respond or don’t respond, and political agents watch process closely… because voter list clean-up always sounds simple on paper, but never feels that simple in real life…
