Key Takeaways

  • UCC Bill passed in Assam Assembly for women's justice
  • Saikia emphasizes one law for all citizens
  • Opposition raises concerns about UCC provisions

This UCC debate in Assam has again become very heated, and honestly,it is not small thing ah . Dilip Saikia,President of Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),has strongly backed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill after Assam Assembly approved it on May 30, 2026 .

And his main argument is that this Bill is major step for women's rights, justice and equal treatment under one legal system . For BJP,this is being projected as promise fulfilled, especially because Saikia said BJP-led NDA government had already promised UCC implementation if re-elected in Assam.

Bill is now going to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya for approval before it is forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu for final assent . So politically and legally, big process is still moving ahead .

In interview with IANS,Saikia said all parties were given chance to express their views during legislative process before UCC was passed . He also made one strong statement:"UCC signifies one nation, one law, and one identity for all communities," while saying India's diverse culture and traditions will continue, but personal laws should come under one common framework .

Few things standing out clearly here:

  • Saikia referred to Syama Prasad Mookerjee's vision for unified legal framework.
  • UCC is being presented as way to ensure justice under one law for all citizens.
  • Opposition parties have raised concerns about specific provisions and exemptions in UCC.

And tbh, this is where debate gets complicated . Supporters are saying UCC will empower women and bring fairness in issues like marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships . Bill also proposes ban on polygamy and mandatory registration of live-in partnerships.

But opposition parties and several organizations are not fully convinced . Their concern is around certain exemptions and provisions inside legislation, and that part cannot be brushed aside only because government is calling it reform.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also praised UCC Bill, saying it will bring new era of social justice and good governance in Assam . BJP side clearly wants to frame this as equality issue, not just legal change.

Still, personal laws are deeply connected with religion, custom, family structure and identity in India . So even if government says one law will bring justice, the real question is how people from different communities will actually respond when this starts affecting daily life…
