Okay,so Maharashtra cabinet just approved this massive farm loan waiver . We are talking about ₹36,585 crore. That's huge number, not small thing ah . And of course,it's coming right before 2024 assembly elections.
This whole thing was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and it's meant to help around 55.72 lakh farmers across the state . They say it's to help with the financial challenges farmers are facing, which everyone knows is very serious.
The scheme covers crop loans taken between April 1,2019,and March 31, 2025 . So basically,if a farmer has an outstanding short-term loan as of September 30, 2025,they can get this relief.
And honestly, this is where details matter. The waiver is for principal and interest up to a maximum of ₹2 lakh for each farmer . It doesn't matter how much land they have, which is interesting .
But what if loan is more than ₹2 lakh? Then they have to do a One-Time Settlement (OTS) with the bank for the extra amount . And for farmers who are good with repayment, there's even incentive bonus up to ₹50,000.
Few key things to note here:
- Total scheme is massive ₹36,585 crore for nearly 55.72 lakh farmers .
- Relief is capped at ₹2 lakh per individual farmer, not based on landholding.
- There are incentives for timely repayment and also rules for bigger loans .
They have also put some rules on who is eligible . For example, salaried people who earn more than ₹25,000 are out. And those who got help from the last Mahatma Jyotirao Phule loan waiver scheme can also qualify if they have arrears up to ₹50,000. It's getting a bit complicated tbh.
But here is the catch . The cabinet has approved it,but official announcement is on hold right now . Apparently,it's because of Election Commission guidelines since there are elections for 17 state council seats on June 18 .
So now committee led by the Chief Secretary will handle the implementation . Their job is to make sure the money reaches right people and that the state can actually afford this whole thing.
Every time elections are near, these big waivers are announced . It gives immediate relief for sure, but does it solve the core issue of farmer distress for long time… that's the real question that never really gets answered.
