Kerala politics has started with quite noisy first day only, and honestly, new Congress-led UDF government under Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan seems to be trying to send one clear message from beginning — welfare promises are coming, but money situation may not be so simple .
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivered policy address in first session of 16th Kerala Assembly, and speech went on for 73 minutes . That is not small thing ah,especially when new government is trying to explain both hopes and fiscal pressure at same time.
But before address itself, there was controversy over performance of national song,Vande Mataram . And that kind of start usually tells you how heated Assembly mood may become in coming days .
One big point from UDF side is planned financial white paper . Government says this will show public actual economic condition of state and fiscal liabilities inherited from previous administration . Basically, they are trying to prepare people for difficult money talk while still pushing welfare agenda.
Few announcements stood out clearly:
- Increased welfare pensions for many citizens across Kerala.
- Free travel on KSRTC buses for women from June 15.
- Integrated transport system to connect different transport networks.
And along with this, government also spoke about forming dedicated department for senior citizens . Scholarship support for economically disadvantaged students pursuing higher education was also mentioned, which will matter a lot if implemented properly and not left as just speech material .
The UDF also repeated its promise list called ‘Indira Guarantees’ . Now people who voted for them will expect delivery, not just slogans, because election promises in Kerala get watched very closely by public and opposition both .
Numbers also make this Assembly very interesting. UDF has 102 seats in 140-member Assembly,so government has strong majority . But Left opposition is at 35 seats, and BJP has entered Assembly for first time with three legislators . So yes, majority is big,but noise from opposition side is not going to be small .
Assembly will meet again on Tuesday to discuss Governor's address further . And maybe that is where real political temperature will be seen, because promises are easy on first day… handling money, opposition pressure and public expectations together is different game altogether…
