So sad to hear about legendary singer Suman Kalyanpur passing away at age 89 . And now one old interview of hers is coming up again where she spoke about constant comparisons with Lata Mangeshkar, and her reaction was just so graceful.
In this chat with DD News, she expressed her own surprise at how often people would get confused between their voices . She said she couldn't understand why it happened so much .
When asked about it,her response was just so humble ah. She said, “Pata nahi kyun aise hain, meri samajh mein nahi aata hai.” It’s like she herself was a bit baffled by whole thing.
And she even had a very sweet, humorous take on it . She joked that maybe God gave them their vocal gifts in equal measure, and that's why they sounded so similar. Such nice way to look at something that could have easily created rivalry.
And honestly, this shows the grace of that generation of artists .
She also made it very clear that their personal relationship was very good . She mentioned they always met warmly, saying, “Bahut achche se milte thi. Bahut achcha humare beech mein rapport rehta tha.” No professional jealousy, just mutual respect .
Some key points from her career:
- Her voice was so similar to Lata Mangeshkar's that listeners often confused them.
- She gave so many memorable hits like 'Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe' and 'Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche'.
- Despite the comparisons, she shared a very cordial and warm relationship with Lata ji.
Her passing on May 31 really marks the end of an era for Indian music . Her songs like 'Dil Ek Mandir Hai' will live on forever.
It just makes you wonder about her journey . To have a voice that beautiful, but to always be compared to another legend… must have been a very unique experience for her…
