Key Takeaways

  • PM SVANidhi celebrates six years of success
  • Over ₹17,800 crore in loans disbursed
  • 46% of beneficiaries are women, promoting inclusion

The Prime Minister Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020 . Basic idea was simple only, give collateral-free working capital loans to street vendors who had lost income during pandemic period.

And for street vendors,collateral-free part is not small thing ah . Many people running small carts, tea stalls, food stalls or roadside businesses don't have property papers or bank comfort like bigger businesses . So even small working capital can decide whether shop opens again or stays shut.

Over six years, scheme has seen more than 1.12 crore loans being disbursed . Beneficiaries also carried out 841 crore digital transactions worth nearly ₹8.96 lakh crore . These numbers are actually massive, and tbh,it shows how informal workers also moved into digital payments when support and access came together.

Official statement said,“More than 75.5 lakh beneficiaries have availed over 1.12 crore loans amounting to more than ₹17,800 crore.” That line alone explains scale of scheme better than any speech can.

Few things standing out clearly here:

  • Nearly 46% of beneficiaries are women .
  • Approximately 70% of beneficiaries belong to marginalized groups.
  • Government has extended scheme's lending period until 2030 .

And this women and marginalized communities angle matters lot . Because street vending is not just about earning daily cash,it is about families, housing, food, healthcare, education and basic dignity in urban areas . If over 55 lakh beneficiaries got digital onboarding also, then access to financial system becomes little less scary for people who were usually left outside it .

Government has also approved restructuring plan to extend support until 2030 . With total outlay of ₹7,332 crore, scheme is expected to benefit additional 11.5 million people, including around 5 million new beneficiaries . Big target, yes, but implementation will decide everything .

Because on paper,PM SVANidhi looks like strong support system for street vendors after pandemic shock . But real question is whether last person on footpath, with small cart and daily uncertainty, actually feels this support without running behind offices again and again…
