Air India CEO search is getting serious now,and honestly, this is not small appointment ah . On June 20,2026,Nipun Aggarwal and Vinod Kannan have come up as leading names, after current CEO Campbell Wilson resigned in April.
And this is coming at time when Tata Group already has lot on its plate with Air India . Airline is still going through major restructuring, and whoever takes charge next will not be walking into easy chair .
Nipun Aggarwal is currently Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer and has been closely involved in restructuring work inside airline . From what is being discussed,he is seen as disciplined,cost-focused and someone who understands Tata side of whole process .
But Vinod Kannan is also very strong name here . He was earlier CEO of Vistara before its merger with Air India in 2024,and that full-service airline experience is making many people look at him seriously .
Few things standing out in this CEO race:
- Nipun Aggarwal has strong internal support and focus on cost control.
- Vinod Kannan brings hands-on full-service airline experience from Vistara.
- Tata Sons internal discussions are strongly shaping final decision.
And tbh, this is where matter becomes more complicated . Aggarwal reportedly has backing from Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, but even that comes with uncertainty because Chandrasekaran’s tenure is set to conclude in February 2027,and there are debates on whether it should be extended .
Critics are also raising one fair point here . Financial discipline is needed, yes, but running global airline like Air India is different game only . Cost control alone may not be enough when airline has operational issues, customer expectations, staff integration and brand pressure all happening together.
Kannan,on other side,is being seen as someone with wider airline management experience . His Vistara background gives him edge in full-service airline environment, but final call will still depend on what Tata Group wants Air India to become from here.
And that is real question rn . Does Tata Group want insider who knows restructuring deeply,or airline operator who has already run similar business before…?
