On June 20,2026,HSL celebrated its 86th Foundation Day,and yes,it is not small thing ah for any shipyard to carry that kind of legacy .
What stood out for me is how whole event was not just about cutting cake and giving speeches . It was more about showing where HSL wants to go next, especially with indigenous shipbuilding and India’s maritime self-reliance goals.
Chairman Capt. Ganti Venkateswarlu was at centre of celebrations and spoke about HSL’s role in supporting India’s vision of self-reliance . And honestly, that point matters because shipbuilding is not some ordinary sector . It connects defence, trade, technology and skilled workers all at same time.
As part of Foundation Day events,Capt. Venkateswarlu inaugurated renovated office facilities for employees . Small thing on paper maybe, but workplace environment does affect morale and productivity . People building ships also need decent systems around them, not just big promises.
Few things clearly stood out from Foundation Day:
- New Sea Trials Management System was launched to enhance operational efficiency during trials
- Renovated office facilities were inaugurated to improve employee work environment
- Commitment to indigenous shipbuilding was again linked with India’s maritime self-reliance goals
And then there are other recent steps too, like commissioning key infrastructure at Slipway-4 and introducing Advanced Welding Simulator . These are kind of upgrades which quietly decide whether workforce is ready for modern shipbuilding or not .
Tbh,Advanced Welding Simulator sounds technical, but actual meaning is simple . Better training, better skills, less dependency, and stronger ability to match modern practices in global market . For shipyard workers, this can make real difference over time .
Capt. Venkateswarlu also credited achievements of HSL to generations of employees who helped build it as a premier shipbuilding and repair organization . That part feels important because institutions don’t run on machines only . They run on people who keep showing up for decades.
But at same time, big legacy also brings big pressure . HSL is talking about innovation, modern practices and maritime self-reliance now,and next question is how fast these upgrades will show impact on ground…
