PhonePe clarification has come at right time because many users genuinely got confused after those inactivity fee alerts . And honestly, this confusion was not small thing ah,especially when people started thinking money may get cut from linked bank account also .
PhonePe has now clearly said that inactivity fees are connected only with dormant PhonePe Wallet . These charges do not affect linked bank accounts and they do not apply to transactions made through Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Main point is this: PhonePe Wallet is prepaid payment instrument (PPI),while UPI pulls money directly from bank account . So both are not same system, even if both are inside same app only .
But problem started because some users received notifications and assumed that if wallet balance is not enough, fee may be deducted from their bank account . PhonePe has assured that no such deduction will happen from linked bank accounts or through UPI transactions.
Few things users should understand clearly:
- Inactivity fees apply only to PhonePe Wallet, not UPI transactions.
- PhonePe alerts users 15 days before any fee deduction.
- Wallet activity and UPI activity are tracked separately .
And this separate tracking part is where many regular users got irritated . Some people may be using PhonePe daily for QR-code payments and money transfers, but if they are doing all that through UPI,their wallet can still be treated as inactive.
PhonePe has also clarified that reactivating wallet does not always mean upgrading to Full KYC . Usually,it can be done through OTP verification and simple transaction,so users do not need to panic immediately after seeing alert.
There is also cashback confusion . Many users think cashback means wallet is active, but cashback credits are generally stored in separate gift card balance and not inside PhonePe Wallet itself . So getting cashback does not automatically mean wallet is active or safe from inactivity charge.
And tbh, this whole thing shows how digital payments have become very normal, but understanding small differences between wallet,UPI,gift card balance and KYC is still messy for many people . Apps may be simple on surface, but rules behind them are not always that simple…
