This Odisha pension issue is honestly very upsetting because we are not talking about some luxury benefit here . We are talking about money that elderly people, disabled people and other vulnerable citizens depend on for daily survival.
Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has now strongly criticized current BJP government over failure to disburse pensions to approximately 18 lakh beneficiaries . In letter to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi,he raised concern that delay has stretched for months and many people have been left without basic support.
And this is not small thing ah . For many pensioners, this monthly amount is what helps them buy food, medicine and manage basic household needs . When payment stops for three months, life does not pause for them.
Patnaik also mentioned tragic case of Sabitri Dora from Beguniapada,Ganjam, who reportedly lost her life due to absence of pension benefits . He said,"This situation is intolerable in a state that claims to protect its most vulnerable citizens," and that line really captures how serious this has become .
Few things standing out clearly in this issue:
- Pension payments overdue for three months — causing distress among the most vulnerable groups .
- Software issues cited as the reason — reflecting negligence and poor governance .
- Past governance model praised — ensured timely and humane pension distribution .
Government side has reportedly cited software issues as reason behind delay . But tbh, when approximately 18 lakh beneficiaries are affected, people will obviously ask why backup system was not ready . Technology problem cannot become excuse for making old and disabled citizens wait endlessly.
Patnaik pointed out that during his administration, pensions were consistently distributed on the 15th of each month under practice called 'Jan Seva Diwas' . He said that system allowed pensioners to collect dues at Gram Panchayat level or even receive them at home if needed.
And that difference matters. One system sounds like it was built around people who may not be able to travel easily . Current situation sounds like people are stuck because administration and software are not moving fast enough.
Patnaik has urged current government to release all pending payments immediately and make sure such delays do not happen again . He also said,"This isn’t just a procedural lapse; it’s significant governance failure that must be addressed promptly."
But bigger question is still sitting there only… when welfare money becomes trapped between software problem and government delay, what exactly are vulnerable citizens supposed to do in meantime…
