This Mullaperiyar dam issue has again started looking tense, and honestly,Kerala side seems quite worried now . Congress MP Dean Kuriakose has raised alarm after Kerala’s representative was removed from Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation Committee .
And this is not some small technical change ah,because matter is about Mullaperiyar dam, which is over 130 years old . When such old dam is going for safety evaluation, who sits in that committee becomes very serious issue for state .
Speaking at press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on June 22, 2026,Dean Kuriakose said T.K. Sivarajan should be reinstated urgently . He called National Dam Safety Authority's (NDSA) unilateral decision a cause for great concern for Kerala.
According to him, this decision came just ahead of critical safety evaluation by independent panel of experts . And that timing is what is making people ask questions about fairness and transparency of whole process .
Kuriakose has also formally communicated these concerns to Union Jal Shakti Minister,C.R. Patil . His point is simple: if Kerala does not have representative during evaluation, then decisions may not properly protect Kerala’s interests and water security .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Dean Kuriakose wants T.K . Sivarajan reinstated in Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation Committee.
- Mullaperiyar dam is over 130 years old and needs careful monitoring during safety evaluation.
- Decision may increase tensions between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over water resources.
And tbh, political side of this is also getting heavier . Tamil Nadu government recently opposed Kerala's plans to construct new Mullaperiyar dam,and Kuriakose said that announcement has added more unease in Kerala.
Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph also objected to removal of Sivarajan . He said Kerala was not consulted about this decision and state would not accept it .
The expert committee was formed under provisions of Dam Safety Act,2021,following Supreme Court directive . So when such committee is handling safety of dam already caught between Kerala and Tamil Nadu for long time, absence of Kerala voice feels like something that can create bigger trouble…
And now question is whether this will stay as committee dispute only,or again turn into another full political fight over Mullaperiyar and water security…
