This Meghalaya homestay plan honestly sounds big,but also very real-life type challenge . Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced plan to set up approximately 3,000 homestays across state within next 12 to 18 months, and if done properly, this can actually put tourism money directly into local homes.
And idea is not just about tourists getting nice place to stay . Government is linking this with tourism-led livelihoods and grassroots entrepreneurship, which means local families should get direct income instead of benefits staying only with big operators .
During live session from Smit village, which is known for its cultural significance,Sangma spoke about how tourism benefits must reach local communities directly . He was interacting with local residents, tourists, and entrepreneurs at village market,so this was not some closed-room announcement only.
But one thing I liked here is that he also visited RC Homestay and spoke with host family about their challenges and hopes . Because from outside, homestay looks simple, but running one means cleanliness, guest handling, food, maintenance, online bookings… not small thing ah .
Few things standing out clearly in this plan:
- Meghalaya already has nearly 900 operational homestays.
- Government plans to sanction additional 2,100 shortly.
- Skills Meghalaya program has trained around 30,000 youth, with focus on tourism and hospitality.
And tbh, civic issues came up also, which is expected . Locals raised problems like garbage collection and inadequate street lighting, and Sangma assured these concerns would be sent to appropriate departments for prompt action . Because tourism cannot grow properly if basic services are weak.
He also said public representative cannot truly understand people's lives without engaging closely with them . That part sounds simple, but it matters . He even shared meal of traditional delicacies with locals at roadside stall, which is small gesture, but politically and socially it sends message.
But bigger picture is 39th National Games that Meghalaya will host in 2027 . Sangma believes this will push tourism, hospitality, and local economic activities further, and homestays may help accommodate visitors during that event .
And all this is part of CM Connect initiative, which is meant to improve direct engagement between citizens and government through physical and digital platforms . Good plan on paper for sure, but real test will be whether these 3,000 homestays actually become steady income for families or just another target number…
