So looks like Trump administration is maybe changing its tune on Iran sanctions ah . Secretary of State Marco Rubio said something during a Senate committee meeting on June 2 that is making some headlines.
He basically indicated that US might consider sanctions relief for Iran, but only as part of future nuclear program talks . This is one of clearest signals so far that they are willing to use sanctions as bargaining chip, not just a punishment.
And he made it very clear why sanctions are there in first place . He said,"Iran is being sanctioned because they enrich uranium . Iran is being sanctioned because they have highly enriched uranium. Iran is being sanctioned because of their nuclear activities." So the logic is simple,if Iran stops these things, sanctions could be discussed.
But this isn't some free gift . Rubio stressed that any deal would depend on Iran taking real, verifiable actions . No more empty promises. They have to actually dismantle their nuclear capabilities before anything happens.
And honestly, this is where things always get stuck.
Senator Rand Paul also spoke up,saying it's good idea to negotiate with adversaries and that removing sanctions can lead to better diplomatic results . But Rubio was quick to clarify that there would be no "signing bonus" for Iran . They have to show compliance first, then only talks about relief can begin .
Few things standing out from his comments:
- Sanctions are being presented as actual leverage for negotiation, not just punishment .
- No upfront concessions,Iran must prove it is compliant before any relief is given.
- Trump's bottom line remains firm: Iran can never get a nuclear weapon.
Rubio also talked about different kinds of sanctions, like ones stopping Iran from making money and others freezing their assets . He suggested both types could be on the table if Iran meets US demands . The main demands are zero enrichment, complete removal of highly enriched uranium, and very strict verification.
And tbh,his final quote says it all: "Simply putting something on a piece of paper is not satisfactory. You have to actually commit to doing it. Then you have to actually do it." This shows how much they are focusing on real results, not just diplomatic words.
But will Iran ever agree to these conditions, especially zero enrichment… that feels like very tough negotiation ahead…
