Saw this news about US Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling out European allies and honestly,he is saying what many have been thinking for long time . He basically wants them to take more responsibility for their own defense.
He was speaking at some Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting and argued that America can't just keep paying for everyone's security . Especially when US has its own challenges in Indo-Pacific and Middle East.
And his one comment was very direct ah . He said,"The reality of NATO, whether we like to hear it or not,is that many countries in Europe were able to build robust social safety nets because they didn't allocate resources for defense,as NATO and the U.S. provided that security for them".
And he has a point,no? For decades, they got security umbrella and now it is time to pay up.
But this is not new issue . He even defended the previous administration for pushing NATO members to spend more. He pointed out that while some countries have promised to increase their budgets, promises are not enough . "They've made these pledges, but it actually has to be reflected in defense spending," he said . So talk is cheap, basically.
Few things he highlighted in his comments:
- Many NATO countries are struggling with their economies,so finding money for military is difficult .
- US has security duties beyond Europe, like in Indo-Pacific and Africa, and resources are not unlimited.
- He praised new members Sweden and Finland, saying they bring advanced defense industries and capabilities.
And tbh, this is where his argument got really serious . He questioned whole point of NATO if some members might block US from using bases on their soil during some future crisis .
He put it very bluntly: "If what we gain from NATO is the ability to use bases, but some members deny access during contingencies, it calls into question the alliance's core rationale." That is a very big accusation to make.
This whole discussion started after another Senator,Chris Coons, asked him about NATO's Article 5 mutual defense commitment . Rubio said he supports NATO but the contributions have to be fair from all sides .
But this whole thing just leaves you wondering . With NATO and G7 meetings coming up,will this pressure from US actually change anything? Or will it just be same story again…
