And honestly,the whole reason for this drama is because of comments from President Donald Trump . He suggested that arms sales to Taiwan could be used as some kind of leverage in talks with China,which obviously made many people very nervous.
Rubio was very clear in his statement,saying "There has been no change to U.S. policy towards Taiwan" . He was really trying to show that Washington's support for the island is still solid.
But senators are clearly worried . They feel these recent talks between US and China might be a sign of a shift. Senator Jeff Merkley pointed out that even delaying weapons packages could look like weakness to Beijing,and that's not good for Taiwan's democracy .
And tbh,this is where things get complicated . Using words like "very good negotiating chip" when talking about a country's security is not small thing ah.
