So,some pretty big news coming out of United Nations ah . Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, has actually been chosen as the President for the UN General Assembly's 81st session. This is huge moment for Bangladesh on the world stage.
He won against Cypriot diplomat Andreas Kakouris, getting 99 votes from the 193-member organization . His presidency will officially start in September, and he'll be taking over from Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
And Rahman is not some newcomer to this scene . He has a very rich background in diplomacy and was also Bangladesh's national security adviser in past. So he knows how things work.
His theme for presidency is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.” Lofty goals for sure.
And tbh,he is stepping into a very difficult situation . UN is dealing with a massive budgetary crisis, plus so many conflicts escalating all over the globe . The whole Iran war and its impact on developing economies is another huge problem on his plate .
Few things standing out here:
- His presidency will happen at same time as the election for a new Secretary-General .
- Rahman says he wants to use Bangladesh's UN peacekeeping experience to build dialogue.
- election really highlighted the divide between the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation and Western nations on who to support.
This support from the group of Muslim nations was a major part of his win, which shows you the kind of geopolitical games going on inside UN rn . India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also sent his congratulations and said India is keen to collaborate.
But at same time, the US is watching closely . US Deputy Permanent Ambassador Tammy Bruce straight up said they need Rahman's leadership to be impartial to make Assembly more efficient .
So he has this massive challenge of navigating a very complex global landscape . He has the potential to influence some very important resolutions on humanitarian issues.
The whole world community will be watching to see how his leadership shapes future of UN . With so much division everywhere, can one person really make a difference and restore trust… or is the system itself just too complicated now…
