Karnataka BJP Petitions Governor Against Withdrawal of Aland Riot Cases

The BJP in Karnataka has formally protested the state cabinet's decision to withdraw criminal cases related to the 2022 Aland riot. Led by Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the delegation met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, alleging that the move is an act of minority appeasement. The riot, centered on the disputed Sri Raghava Chaitanya Temple and Ladle Mashak Dargah, involved the alleged desecration of a Shivalinga and attacks on police. The BJP claims the withdrawal insults law-abiding citizens and undermines the judicial process.

Key Takeaways

  • BJP urges Governor to block withdrawal of Aland riot cases
  • Opposition alleges minority appeasement by Karnataka govt
  • Aland riot involved desecration of a 600-year-old shrine

Just saw this news coming from Karnataka and it looks like a major political fight is brewing over some old riot cases . And honestly, the allegations being made are very serious .

A high-level BJP delegation has gone straight to the Governor,Thaawarchand Gehlot,to complain about the state's Congress government . They submitted memorandum on Tuesday, led by Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, who is Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council .

The main issue is that the government is trying to withdraw criminal cases related to the Aland riot . BJP is directly calling it "vote-bank politics" and saying government is trying to appease minorities by dropping charges in a communal violence case .

This whole thing goes back to an incident at the Sri Raghava Chaitanya Temple in Kalaburagi district . It's a very sensitive place ah,it has a Hindu saint's samadhi and also shrine of Sufi saint,Hazrat Shaikh Alauddin Ansari. But during Maha Shivaratri, tensions flared up badly.

There was stone-pelting,and reports say even senior district officials and a Union Minister were attacked . And a 600-year-old Shivalinga was allegedly desecrated . Not small thing at all.

Few things standing out clearly in this case:

  • The 600-year-old Shivalinga was at center of communal dispute in Aland.
  • Attacks on police personnel were reported during the peak of the 2022 violence.
  • The Cabinet's decision is now being called minority appeasement by BJP.

And tbh, this is where things get really uncomfortable.

Chalavadi Narayanaswamy said he was shocked because the matter is still in court . He told reporters,"The government is effectively encouraging those who attacked devotees and police." He also said that Dalit protesters and Kannada activists face much tougher legal action for their protests.

The Aland police had filed cases against hundreds of people, including a key accused named Ansari . Congress leaders have been arguing that innocent youths were wrongly caught up in this . But BJP is firm that withdrawing these cases is an insult to Hindu sentiments .

So now the Governor has been urged to intervene and tell the Cabinet to rethink its decision . The goal is to maintain communal harmony, but this move itself has created so much political heat.

Now ball is in the Governor's court... but with such strong accusations from both sides, you have to wonder how this will actually calm things down…
