This is actually interesting move from Indian government side because diesel use in India is not small thing ah . When diesel consumption is nearly double that of petrol, even small blending change can affect huge part of road transport.
V. Umashankar,Secretary of Ministry of Roads Transport and Highways said at the CII Multimodal Transportation and Logistics Summit that government may bring mandate for blending isobutanol with diesel as early as this year . Main idea is energy security and cutting carbon emissions in road and highways sector .
And honestly, this is not some random fuel experiment only . Bharat Petroleum is already doing strategic research on blending isobutanol with diesel, and early results have been promising as per what was shared.
Umashankar also said,"Blending of diesel has been looked into with great seriousness," which shows government is taking this seriously and not treating it like side project . Mandate could be finalized and implemented within the year.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Isobutanol blending with diesel may come as early as this year.
- Diesel consumption in India is nearly double that of petrol .
- Bharat Petroleum research on blending has shown promising preliminary results.
But fuel blending is just one part of bigger transport push being discussed . Ministry is also drafting notification for truck-trailer systems so battery swapping and charging can become easier for electric heavy-duty vehicles .
And tbh, this battery swapping idea makes sense for trucks because nobody wants heavy commercial vehicle standing idle for long hours just for charging . Proposed tractor-trailer interchangeability system would allow swapping of entire truck fronts, which could make logistics faster if executed properly.
Hydrogen side is also moving quietly . Government hydrogen logistics experiments are underway, and costs linked with hydrogen transportation are being seen as competitive with other logistics methods . Main expensive part is setting up hydrogen refueling stations, but government support is helping infrastructure development.
Recently, hydrogen buses have been introduced on routes between Delhi and Faridabad, and Delhi and Noida . For public transport, this is a big signal that hydrogen is not just being talked about in meetings but actually being tested on road.
Then there is Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, which is already operational at two plazas and third is expected to launch soon . Plan is to take MLFF to all major toll plazas across country in coming year so vehicles do not keep getting stuck at toll booths.
At same time, advanced traffic management system is also planned for Delhi NCR region, with project bids set to be issued shortly . Government also wants to separate slow and fast-moving traffic on expressways and access-controlled highways,so average vehicle speeds can go up on Indian roads.
All these plans sound useful on paper, but real question is execution . Fuel blending, battery swapping, hydrogen buses,MLFF tolling… everything depends on how smoothly it works outside conference halls and on actual highways…
