Big energy update has come from Manohar Lal Khattar, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, and honestly, this one is not small ah . During review meeting with Tripura officials on May 31,2026,he spoke about India's power future in way that shows how much pressure electricity system is already facing.
And main headline is nuclear power . Khattar said government is aiming for 100 GW of nuclear power generation by 2047 . Right now,India produces around 8 GW of nuclear power, and another 9 GW is under construction . So yes, target is huge compared to where country stands today .
But this is also coming at time when demand is already touching crazy levels . Electricity demand reached record peak of 270.8 GW on May 21,and Centre now wants to increase power generation capacity from current 283 GW to nearly 300 GW by next year .
That gap between what we use today and what we may need tomorrow is clearly growing fast . Industrial growth, electric vehicles, and normal household consumption are all pushing demand up together . And tbh, when EVs become more common, this pressure will not stay small.
Few things standing out from Khattar's Tripura review:
- India is targeting 100 GW nuclear power generation by 2047.
- Tripura will get ₹1,200 crore urban projects for improving urban infrastructure .
- Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has accumulated losses of around ₹800 crore.
And Tripura's power issue seems to be another serious part of meeting . Khattar raised concern about financial health of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL),especially because of around ₹800 crore accumulated losses and transmission losses . That means problem is not just producing electricity, but also how it is supplied, billed and paid for .
He also spoke about reducing power theft and improving revenue collection through smart metering initiatives . Now smart meters always become sensitive topic because people worry about bills, but from government side, they see it as way to stop leakage and make system more accountable.
There was also discussion around new tenders to upgrade transmission infrastructure so Tripura can handle future power needs better . Khattar's visit to Tripura came after similar project reviews in Mizoram,so clearly northeastern states are getting attention in both energy and urban development work.
And honestly, big targets like 100 GW nuclear by 2047 sound impressive on paper, but real test will be execution, public trust, costs, safety, and whether states like Tripura can fix basic distribution issues at same time…
