Just saw this news about Haryana government's plan for grain storage, and honestly,it feels like something that should have happened long time back.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has basically told officials to get moving on this . plan is to create an additional 20 lakh metric tons of grain storage capacity within the year.
And the main reason is to stop so much food production from getting damaged . We are talking about 4-5% of state's annual foodgrain output just getting lost after harvest. That's a huge number ah.
During one review meeting for this Haryana Vision – 2047 plan,CM Saini highlighted how critical covered storage is . Right now,Haryana produces something like 115 lakh metric tons of wheat,71 lakh metric tons of rice, and 110 lakh metric tons of fruits and vegetables .
But the existing storage capacity is only 66 lakh metric tons . That's a massive gap.
And honestly, this is where things get uncomfortable. All that effort by farmers, and so much of it just spoils because there's nowhere to keep it safe .
Few things standing out from their plan:
- They want comprehensive strategy over next five years .
- Construction will happen using Public-Private Partnership model .
- Solar panels will be installed on warehouses for sustainability.
Saini also stressed on building more cold storage infrastructure, not just regular warehouses . And he mentioned adding modern mechanized systems, like conveyor belts,in marketing yards to reduce manual handling of grain bags. This is a good move for efficiency .
The big goal is to eventually increase storage capacity to 130 lakh metric tons to meet future demand . It's all about making sure Haryana remains important for India's food security.
But you know how these big government plans are . idea of integrating renewable energy with warehouses is smart, tbh . But implementation is everything.
Building all this is one part of story, but making sure it's managed well and actually helps the farmers is a totally different challenge…
