So FIFA is really changing everything for upcoming World Cup in 2026 . The whole tournament is expanding from 32 teams to 48,which is honestly huge jump. Never seen before in history.
And it’s going to be hosted by three countries for first time ever: United States,Canada, and Mexico . The whole thing kicks off on June 11,2026 . They say the reason for this is to make it more inclusive and let more countries participate.
The format is also completely different now . Instead of eight groups, there will be 12 groups of four teams each. Every team plays three matches in their group.
But this is where it gets interesting . The top two teams from each group AND the eight best third-placed teams will go to knockout rounds. That means 32 teams will advance, not 16 like before. They are even adding a whole new knockout round, the Round of 32 .
And tbh, this means a lot more football.
Total number of matches will go from 64 to a massive 104 . This will make the tournament almost six weeks long. That's lot of football ah.
Few things standing out clearly from this announcement:
- Total matches are increasing from 64 to 104,making tournament much longer .
- Some teams are making comebacks after very long time, like Iraq and Scotland .
- United States will host most of matches, including final itself.
One good thing is that some nations who haven't qualified for years will get a chance . For example,Iraq is coming back for first time in 40 years, and Scotland after 28-year absence. That's actually very cool for their fans.
And the hosting is spread out over 16 stadiums across the three countries . Mexico will also be making history as first nation to host matches in three separate World Cups, after 1970 and 1986.
They are promising record-breaking revenue and viewership and all that . But with so many teams and so many matches,I just wonder if the quality will get diluted… or if this is actually good for the sport…
