So Vijay Shankar is finally heading to Lanka Premier League . And he’s the only Indian player in the whole tournament this year, which is pretty interesting .
He has been signed by Kandy Royals for the LPL 2026 edition . This is his first time playing in this league,so all eyes will be on him.
And the draft recently happened where Avishka Fernando was number one overall pick . He was picked by defending champions SC Jaffna Kings,so they are already looking strong. They also got players like David Wiese and Sandeep Lamichhane.
And tbh, this is big move for Shankar's career . We all remember him from the 2019 World Cup,but seeing him in a major foreign league will be a different thing altogether.
Few key things to note here:
- Vijay Shankar is sole Indian representative in LPL 2026.
- The tournament will run from July 17 to August 8 .
- Over 650 players from 21 countries registered for the draft.
But Kandy Royals team looks quite powerful on paper now . Shankar is joining a lineup that already has Moeen Ali and Wanindu Hasaranga . That's some serious international talent in one team.
The whole league has five franchises fighting it out – SC Jaffna Kings,Kandy Royals,Colombo Kaps,Dambulla Sixers, and Galle Gallants . All teams are trying to build their best possible squads.
The tournament director,Samantha Dodanwela, also mentioned that the quality of players shows how much the league has grown . And with so many players registering,it seems LPL is getting more popular globally. Not small thing ah .
It really feels like the league is trying to become more competitive every year . The mix of big international names and local Sri Lankan talent is always exciting to watch .
But will Shankar’s participation open doors for more Indian cricketers in these leagues in future… or is this just one-off situation for now… that is something to think about…
