So the Real Madrid presidential election is suddenly getting very interesting . Challenger Enrique Riquelme has made one huge promise and it involves a club legend.
He has basically announced that if he wins vote on June 4,he will appoint Raul Gonzalez as the club's sporting director . And this is not small thing ah.
We are talking about Raul, the Raul . One of Real Madrid's all-time greatest players with 323 goals in 741 appearances . He is currently coaching the reserve team,Real Madrid Castilla,so he knows system inside out .
Riquelme even gave a direct quote to Cadena COPE radio station, saying “If I win the election,Raul Gonzalez Blanco will be Real Madrid's director of sport.” He also said he has spoken to Raul and that “the more I know him,the more certain I am that he will always look out for Real Madrid.”
And tbh, this is a very smart political move .
But it's also a direct challenge to the current president,Florentino Perez . Perez has been running things without proper sporting director since he returned to power back in 2009 . It's a completely different way of managing the club.
And things get even more complicated because there are rumors that if Perez wins,he might bring back Jose Mourinho . The same Mourinho who basically pushed Raul out of the club in 2010 . drama is just too much.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Riquelme is promising a big role for club icon Raul Gonzalez.
- Perez has been running without a sporting director since 2009 and might bring back Mourinho .
- This is first contested election since 2006,which is huge deal.
You have Riquelme at just 37 years old, representing a new generation . Then you have Perez at 79,the powerful figure who has been there for so long, often getting re-elected without any opposition .
So vote on Sunday is not just about choosing a president only . It feels like it’s a vote on the whole identity and future direction of Real Madrid… who controls transfers, what the culture will be,everything is on the line…
