Wow,this is actually very interesting ah . Yoga and cricket, not something you hear about together every day. But Aarti Pal,who is India's first Arjuna Awardee in Yogasana,is trying to make it happen with cricketers at Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) .
And her whole idea was not to turn these players into yogis or anything . It was more of an experiment to see how yoga could help with their performance in sport that needs so much explosive movement and mental focus.
This whole thing is getting more attention now because the first ever World Yogasana Championship is happening at EKA Arena in Ahmedabad from June 4 to 8 . This is a big deal, with over 500 athletes from more than 60 countries coming . It’s really making Yogasana look like serious competitive sport on world stage.
For Aarti, yoga is not just some physical exercise but a full science that can really boost an athlete’s game .
And honestly, this makes so much sense when you think about it .
She saw some clear benefits with MPCA cricketers:
- Enhanced flexibility observed — Regular Yogasana practice significantly improved flexibility of MPCA cricketers .
- Injury prevention focus — Yoga practices helped reduce injury risks, crucial for athlete consistency .
- Mental strength development — Techniques like Pranayama foster emotional stability and mental resilience .
But it’s not just about being flexible . Aarti says that improved flexibility helped the cricketers perform better on field. And she also stressed on injury prevention, saying,“As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.” By doing yoga, players can stay in top shape and avoid getting injured so often . That only makes team stronger.
And then there's the mental side, which we often forget in sports . She argues that emotional balance and mental focus are super important for winning. With practices like Pranayama and meditation, athletes can learn to stay calm under pressure.
She said, “These practices are essential in building mental resilience, which can be the deciding factor in high-stakes situations” . And we all know how much pressure our cricketers face during big matches .
So it’s not just about touching your toes,it’s about training your mind for battle . I wonder if more sports teams in India will start taking this seriously...
