This Jal Jeevan Mission update from Uttar Pradesh actually feels different from usual government scheme news . Because here, women in villages are not just shown as beneficiaries, they are being made part of daily public health work also.
And honestly, that is not small thing ah. Clean drinking water sounds basic, but in rural areas one contaminated handpump or source can create health trouble for whole community.
Under Yogi Adityanath -led government, the Field Testing Kit (FTK) campaign is being used across more than 97,000 villages . Groups of five women in different Gram Panchayats have been given FTKs so they can test drinking water quality regularly, not wait endlessly for some outside team to come.
Prabhas Kumar ,Special Secretary and Executive Director of Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department, stated,"Under this mission, groups of 05 women each have been provided with Field Testing Kits in almost all Gram Panchayats and revenue villages across the state."
And this is where it becomes more interesting. These trained women are checking water samples themselves, and at same time they are also earning honorarium for doing water quality tests . So it is public health work plus small but real income support .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Women are getting honorarium for performing water quality tests .
- FTKs help them quickly identify and report contaminated water sources.
- mission has connected 12.48 crore households to tap water since its launch.
Earlier, water testing process used to be slow and honestly, too dependent on officials and labs . Now with FTKs,women can spot suspected harmful chemicals and pathogens in drinking water much faster and alert authorities before situation becomes serious.
As of now, around 63,700 water quality samples have been tested in current financial year alone . That number shows this is not just symbolic training or photo-op type activity, work is actually happening on ground.
But at same time, real test will be consistency only. Kits have to be available, training has to continue, payments should not get delayed, and reports should lead to quick action . Otherwise even good system can become another file-based scheme…
And maybe that is main question here. If rural women are trusted with water safety today, will system also keep trusting them with more decision-making tomorrow…
