Delhi trying hydrogen fuel cell buses now is actually interesting, because public transport and pollution are not small topics here ah . On May 28,2026 ,Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced pilot program for hydrogen fuel cell buses, and honestly, this feels like one of those plans people will watch very closely.
This initiative is being done with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and NTPC . Idea is to test hydrogen buses as part of Delhi’s push towards cleaner public transport options, especially when city has been fighting pollution for years .
Singh said,"Delhi is steadily moving towards clean,future-ready public mobility solutions, and hydrogen fuel technology represents an important step in our journey towards environmentally responsible transport systems." Big statement, but now real test will be on roads only.
And tbh, hydrogen buses do sound promising on paper . They are known globally for zero emissions and operational efficiency, which makes sense for big city like Delhi where bus network carries so many people daily.
Few things standing out in this plan:
- DTC and NTPC are working together to pilot hydrogen buses.
- Hydrogen fuel cell buses will run under Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model .
- These buses are meant to have zero tailpipe emissions .
Under proposed setup, buses will be deployed through Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model . This means DTC can manage operational expenses at pre-approved rates, while extra cost support is being looked at through NTPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is also expected once operational details are finalised . Dr. Singh said cooperation between different stakeholders can help speed up adoption of clean fuel technologies in urban transport.
But at same time,Delhi has seen many transport promises before,so people will naturally ask practical questions . How many buses will actually run,how smooth operations will be,what cost will look like after pilot… all that matters.
And honestly,if this works,it can become good step for cleaner buses in National Capital . But if it stays limited to pilot and paperwork, then public will again be left wondering what changed on ground…
