This Delhi demolition story from Haiderpur village,Shalimar Bagh is one of those cases where development and people’s homes/shops both come into same frame, and honestly,it becomes uncomfortable very fast . On May 31, 2026,Delhi government started demolition drive targeting 143 illegal structures in area.
And this is not random action from local officials only. Demolition is happening after Supreme Court ruling connected to unauthorized constructions blocking public Right of Way . Government side is saying road widening cannot move ahead unless these encroachments are removed.
According to District Magistrate S.S. Parihar, this step is needed for ongoing road widening project on corridor connecting different parts of city . Identified structures are said to fall within 30-meter Right of Way,which is marked for public road use under Master Plan of Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
But tbh, when bulldozers enter any residential or village area, legal words don’t reduce anxiety on ground . Even if land papers and court orders are there, people watching structures come down will not see it as simple traffic project only.
Few things standing out here:
- Supreme Court order cleared way for removal of illegal constructions.
- 143 illegal structures in Haiderpur village area of Shalimar Bagh were targeted on May 31, 2026.
- Road widening is meant to reduce traffic jams and help emergency services like ambulances and fire trucks .
And the administration says this whole issue was confirmed after joint survey on January 10,2026 . Parihar has said efforts will continue until all encroachments are removed,so road expansion can go ahead.
Traffic angle is also not small thing ah. Existing road width has reportedly been compromised because of encroachments, leading to regular jams and even slowing down ambulances and fire trucks . In city like Delhi, that delay can become serious within minutes.
At same time, land history makes matter more complicated emotionally . DM explained that land has been government-owned since late 1960s,and acquisition process was completed over four decades ago . Still, encroachments continued there till now.
Some residents did try to challenge government action in court, claiming land acquisition had lapsed . But Delhi High Court rejected those claims and accepted validity of acquisition process, along with need for road project in public interest. After that,Supreme Court also supported removal of encroachments.
And now demolition is moving ahead, but bigger question still sits there quietly… when illegal structures stay for decades and then suddenly get removed for public project, who really carries cost of that delay?
