Key Takeaways

  • Delhi CM Gupta promotes menstrual health awareness
  • New policies aim for better sanitary access in schools
  • Education Minister emphasizes dignity and confidence

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta speaking about menstrual hygiene with school principals on World Menstrual Hygiene Day is not small thing ah,especially when girls in government schools still face basic toilet and sanitary pad issues .

On May 28,Rekha Gupta held virtual meeting with government school principals and Education Department officials . During interaction, she said educational institutions need to become safer and more comfortable for girls, not just in words but in daily functioning also .

Under 'Menstrual Health Matters' campaign, she announced new steps around menstrual hygiene awareness and access across Delhi . One major point was special advisory for regular upkeep and timely refilling of sanitary pad vending machines in government schools, public toilets and Arogya Mandirs.

And honestly, this vending machine part is where execution will matter most . Machines being installed is one thing, but if they are empty or not working, then girls are again left helpless only .

Few key things announced here:

  • Curriculum for Classes 6 to 9 will be enhanced for better menstrual health education.
  • ASHA and Anganwadi workers will spread accurate menstrual health information across households .
  • Immediate action was directed on complaints about school toilets and sanitation facilities.

Gupta also spoke about quality-tested sanitary options and access to high-quality biodegradable sanitary products . That part is good because menstrual hygiene is not just about availability, but safety and hygiene too.

But another uncomfortable part came up during her address . She raised concern over toilet blocks in some schools, including complaints about poor sanitation and damaged facilities . She instructed that toilets must be kept clean and broken doors or other infrastructure issues should be repaired quickly.

And tbh, this is basic dignity issue . If school toilets are dirty, broken or unsafe, girls suffer silently many times and attendance also gets affected . Nobody should have to choose between health and going to school.

Gupta also said girls should feel comfortable discussing health concerns beyond menstruation, including PCOS,anaemia and HPV vaccination . Education Minister Ashish Sood also said menstrual health is not just health issue, but also about dignity, awareness and self-confidence . He said Education Department must continue awareness work in schools, and also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier spoken about this topic during his Independence Day speech.

All this sounds like right direction, but real test will be inside school corridors, toilets, classrooms and those vending machines after few months . Will girls actually feel change,or will this also become another good announcement waiting for follow-up…
