This Zubeen Garg case already had too much pain around it,but now Gauhati High Court denying bail to Shyamkanu Mahanta has made whole matter feel even more serious . Mahanta is prime accused in high-profile death investigation of noted Assamese musician Zubeen Garg, and public mood in Assam is clearly not calm at all.
The ruling came on May 29,and court refused bail amid allegations that Mahanta could potentially abscond if released . That is not small thing ah,especially in case where emotions are already running so high across Assam.
And Advocate General for Assam,Devajit Saikia strongly argued against bail application . He told court there were multiple grounds to believe Mahanta might try to evade justice. One major point raised was about deleted data from Mahanta's mobile phone, which investigators reportedly managed to retrieve .
That part honestly makes situation more uncomfortable . If deleted phone data is being discussed in court, then naturally questions around evidence tampering will come up . Court was also informed about Mahanta's alleged attempts to influence witness statements related to Garg's death.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Gauhati High Court denied bail to Shyamkanu Mahanta on May 29.
- Devajit Saikia argued Mahanta could potentially abscond, and raised issue of deleted data from Mahanta's mobile phone.
- Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been pursuing case after Zubeen Garg's death, and chargesheet in December named seven individuals, including Mahanta .
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore . His death happened just day before he was scheduled to perform at an event organized under NEIF banner. For fans, this timing itself was heartbreaking, and then investigation angle made grief turn into anger.
After his death,Assam Police’s CID formed a Special Investigation Team to look into circumstances around it . That investigation later led to chargesheet in December naming seven individuals, including Mahanta. Four of those named in chargesheet have been booked on serious charges of murder, which shows why this case is being treated with so much intensity.
But at same time, there is another layer making things confusing for ordinary people. Singapore authorities carried out parallel investigation and said there was no evidence of foul play involved in Garg's death . Still,Assam authorities are continuing their own probe and have not been affected by that finding .
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also publicly called incident a “plain and simple murder,” and said government is committed to justice. That statement itself added more weight to public demand, especially when social media is already full of people asking for accountability .
And tbh, this case now feels stuck between grief, public anger, legal arguments and two different investigation readings . Fans want answers, court is looking at bail and evidence, and investigators are still pushing forward… but what really happened around Zubeen Garg's death is still hanging there.
