CCPA Imposes ₹7 Lakh Fine on Vajiram and Ravi for Misleading AdsWire Service: IANS

Key Takeaways

  • CCPA fines Vajiram and Ravi ₹7 lakh for misleading ads
  • Misrepresentation of course involvement highlighted
  • Over ₹1.46 crore penalties imposed on coaching institutes

And when CCPA fines one big institute ₹7,00,000 for misleading advertising,it naturally makes students and parents look twice.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) took action after investigation found that Vajiram and Ravi allegedly did not clearly tell what exact courses successful candidates had actually taken before clearing UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2023 . That detail matters a lot, because one photo in ad can influence thousands of students .

As per CCPA,the institute showcased names, photographs and achievements of successful candidates, but did not properly disclose nature of their engagement with institute . And honestly, this is where coaching ads become tricky.

The ruling was led by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and focus seems clear — students should not be misled while choosing coaching, especially in high-pressure exam space like UPSC CSE . Because families spend big money thinking these toppers came through full coaching path.

Main issue is around Interview Guidance Programme (IGP) . CCPA found that IGP starts only after candidates have independently cleared Preliminary and Mains stages of UPSC CSE . So if ad gives impression that same candidates were products of full-length coaching programs, that becomes very misleading for common student.

Few things standing out clearly here:

  • CCPA imposed fine of ₹7,00,000 on Vajiram and Ravi IAS Study Centre.
  • Institute allegedly hid specific course details of candidates who cleared UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2023.
  • CCPA has imposed penalties totaling over ₹1.46 crore on coaching institutes for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices.

And this is not just about one institute only . CCPA has issued over 60 notices to various coaching institutes, which shows problem is much bigger in education market . IIT-JEE,NEET,RBI and other competitive exam coaching ads are also under scanner for similar kind of claims.

Tbh,students already face enough stress without having to decode marketing tricks . If one topper attended only interview guidance after clearing earlier stages on their own, then ad should say that clearly . Simple.

But coaching industry often sells hope in very polished way . Big photos, big ranks, big promises… and somewhere in between, small details disappear.

And that is real uncomfortable part here, because for one institute it may be advertisement, but for one student it may be loan, savings, relocation and one full year of life…
