Punjab local body election story is looking like one proper warning signal for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) . And for BJP,it has become reason to celebrate because numbers from urban local bodies are not looking comfortable for ruling party at all.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, the BJP,is claiming strong momentum in Punjab after elections held on May 26 . According to BJP leader Amit Malviya,AAP is unlikely to breach 1,000-seat mark, and he says this would be first time in 11 years that ruling party in Punjab fails to do that.
That is not small thing ah,because local body elections often show ground mood more directly than big rallies and speeches . If ruling party is struggling in Municipal Corporations and Councils, then people will obviously start reading bigger political meaning into it.
Counting happened under tight security, and total 7,555 candidates were in contest across Municipal Corporations and Councils . AAP had nominated 1,801 candidates,Congress put up 1,550 and BJP had 1,316 candidates in field .
And tbh,the interesting part is not just AAP's possible setback, but BJP's jump in places where it has been trying to grow without old support systems . Malviya pointed out that despite incumbency advantage,AAP's performance shows visible anti-incumbency against Bhagwant Mann government.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- AAP is unlikely to breach 1,000-seat mark,as per Amit Malviya.
- Reports of intimidation and technical disqualifications of opposition candidates have raised concern.
- BJP has increased its wins from 59 wards in 2021 to 169 wards in 2026.
But allegations part cannot be ignored either . When reports of intimidation and technical disqualifications of opposition candidates come up,it automatically makes people question how fair whole fight was on ground.
At same time,BJP's rise from 59 wards in 2021 to 169 wards in 2026 is something party will keep repeating loudly now . Malviya is also linking this to BJP's grassroots strategies and saying party has exceeded expectations in difficult environment.
And for AAP,this is where problem becomes bigger than just municipal numbers . If urban voters are sending some kind of message against Bhagwant Mann government, then upcoming state elections may become much more complicated than party expected.
Punjab politics has always moved in unexpected ways, and this churn around BJP,AAP and Congress is making things more open than before . Whether this is temporary anger or start of something bigger… that question is still hanging there.
