Key Takeaways

  • BJD raises alarm on rising human-elephant conflicts
  • 171 human deaths reported due to elephant attacks
  • Call for better habitat protection and conflict management

This elephant-human conflict issue in Odisha is honestly getting scary now . Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has raised serious concerns, and looking at numbers,it really does not feel like small matter ah .

During press conference at party's headquarters,Senior Vice President Debi Prasad Mishra said state is seeing troubling rise in human deaths, crop destruction and property damage because elephants are entering human areas more often . He especially mentioned Dhenkanal,Angul,Keonjhar,Sundargarh,Mayurbhanj, and Khordha .

And reason he gave is not some mystery also . Mishra blamed unscientific mining practices, rampant deforestation, and unchecked development projects inside elephant habitats . Basically, when forests and movement paths are disturbed, elephants come out looking for food and water, and then both villagers and animals end up in danger.

According to 2024 elephant census,Odisha has approximately 2,103 elephants . But nearly 185 elephant deaths were reported over past two years, which is disturbing by itself. At same time, human casualties are also very high, with 171 deaths and around 500 injuries from elephant attacks reported in last year.

Few numbers standing out badly here:

  • Human casualties — 171 deaths and around 500 injuries from elephant attacks reported in the last year .
  • Elephant mortality — 264 elephant deaths recorded over the past three years, highlighting the crisis .
  • Call for action — BJD demands legal protection for elephant corridors and better habitat management .

And tbh,17 deaths per 100 elephants is not some normal statistic people can just ignore . Mishra said Odisha has highest rate of human fatalities per elephant in India, and that says a lot about how badly conflict is being managed on ground .

He also said government must use funds from Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) more effectively for habitat conservation and conflict mitigation strategies . BJD also pointed to past initiatives from previous BJD government, like identifying elephant corridors and increasing compensation for affected families, calling them successful measures that need to be revived .

Now BJD is asking for immediate action, including legal protections for identified elephant corridors, scientific monitoring systems, and district-level task forces for better wildlife management and public safety . Mishra also stressed on stopping unscientific mining and forest destruction in wildlife-sensitive areas.

But bigger question is still hanging there… if elephant routes keep getting blocked and forests keep shrinking, how long can villages and elephants both keep paying price?
