This news from Hauz Khas,Delhi honestly feels very unsettling . A man who spent decades in public service,Dhanendra Kumar, the first Chairman of Competition Commission of India (CCI),died after fire broke out inside his own residence on evening of May 29,2026 .
And what makes it more disturbing is how sudden everything seems to have happened . The 80-year-old retired IAS officer reportedly suffered injuries due to smoke inhalation after fire started following blast from air-conditioning unit . His son was also injured and is undergoing treatment, but is said to be out of danger .
Fire reportedly broke out around 11:18 PM when five individuals, including family members and domestic staff, were inside house . Emergency services and police were alerted quickly, and rescue operation started immediately.
Kumar and his son were taken out from building and rushed to nearby hospital . But despite medical efforts,Dhanendra Kumar could not survive. One normal evening turning into tragedy like this is honestly hard to process .
Few things standing out clearly in this incident:
- Fire broke out around 11:18 PM on May 29, 2026 in Hauz Khas,Delhi.
- Dhanendra Kumar died after smoke inhalation following reported blast from an air-conditioning unit.
- His son sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment, but is said to be out of danger.
And this is not just any retired officer we are talking about . Dhanendra Kumar joined Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1968 and went on to hold several major posts, including roles in Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways . That kind of career is not small thing ah .
He also served as Secretary of Ministry of Culture, where his work was linked with protecting India's cultural heritage . Later,as inaugural Chairman of CCI from February 2009 to June 2011,he helped build early framework for competition law in India and pushed fair market practices.
His work was not limited to India only. Kumar served as Executive Director at World Bank and represented India,Bangladesh,Sri Lanka, and Bhutan from 2005 to 2009 . Ministry of Corporate Affairs had also appointed him to lead committee for drafting National Competition Policy, and he received National Citizens Award from Haryana government for contributions to industrial development.
But at same time, when you read about such long public life ending because of smoke inside own home,it leaves very strange feeling . So many titles,so many responsibilities,so many years of service…and then one night, one reported AC blast, and everything changes…
