This Kerala budget fight has now taken pretty sharp political turn, and Binoy Viswam from Communist Party of India is clearly not treating this as normal budget disagreement . He is saying recent Revised Budget brought by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is moving away from welfare politics, and that is not small thing ah.
At press conference held on Friday,Viswam said budget looks like clear departure from policies followed by previous Left Democratic Front government . His main worry is that government is trying to build one narrative that Kerala is stuck in debt trap.
And honestly, this “debt trap” argument is where debate becomes more serious . Because once state is shown as financially unstable, then cutting welfare schemes starts looking like responsible governance to some people, even if poor and vulnerable families feel direct pain.
Viswam also raised concern about State Planning Board . According to him, budget’s implications for Board suggest Kerala may be moving away from planning principles that shaped its economic direction from days of Jawaharlal Nehru .
Few points standing out from his criticism:
- Concerns over debt narrative — Viswam believes budget portrays Kerala as financially unstable.
- Shift from welfare policies — Budget signals reduction in welfare initiatives previously championed.
- Impact on State Planning Board — Proposed changes could dismantle established planning frameworks.
And tbh, this is not just about one allocation here or one scheme there . Viswam is basically warning that whole thinking behind Kerala’s development model may be changing, from welfare and planning to austerity and cutbacks.
He also argued that earlier focus on welfare helped in pushing social equity . So if new budget reduces that support, vulnerable people who depend on government help may be first ones to feel pressure .
But at same time, current government side will likely keep saying financial discipline is needed, because Kerala’s economic challenges are real only . That is why this debate can easily become major political issue in coming days.
For now,Viswam’s remarks show that Revised Budget has opened bigger question in Kerala politics: is state correcting finances,or slowly walking away from welfare model that many people still depend on…
