BJP MLA Rishiraj Hazarika openly criticized Congress on May 28,2026,claiming party is opposing measures meant for women’s protection and rights .
Speaking to IANS,Hazarika said BJP government is committed to women’s safety and empowerment in Assam . He linked this directly with Uniform Civil Code (UCC),which he said was introduced in Assembly under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after promise made while returning to power .
His point was simple only,BJP promised UCC to people of Assam and then passed it with majority . In his version, this is not just legal reform, but part of bigger push for women’s safety, reservation and welfare through different departments .
And tbh,the sharpest part came when he attacked Congress during Assembly discussions . Hazarika said,“They are opposing provisions related to women, and even have problems with giving property rights to women.” That is not small allegation ah,because property rights and women’s safety are emotional issues in every state.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- UCC introduced in Assam Assembly — aimed at providing uniform legal framework for all citizens .
- BJP's commitment to women's safety — continuous efforts to enhance women's rights and welfare .
- Congress criticized for its stance — Hazarika claims opposition lacks support for women's empowerment.
But opposition side has also raised concerns around personal laws and minority communities,so this is not some simple yes-no debate . Assembly discussions reportedly became heated, with ruling party presenting UCC as progressive reform and opposition questioning its wider impact.
At same time,BJP is clearly trying to position itself as side speaking for women’s rights in Assam . Hazarika’s comments show how women’s safety, welfare and property rights are now becoming part of bigger political messaging under Sarma’s leadership.
And Congress being painted as anti-women is strong political framing,no doubt . Whether people accept that framing or see this as another political fight around UCC is different matter .
Because in Assam, this issue is not just about one law or one Assembly debate . It is about women’s rights, community concerns, personal law fears and party politics all mixing together… and nobody knows where public mood will finally settle…
