On May 29,2026 , Abhijit Majumdar ,the Assam Trinamool Congress Chief, announced his resignation and his reason was very direct, also very explosive .
He alleged that party has shifted its focus towards specific community and even dubbed it the "Trinamool Muslim Congress." That is not small remark ah,especially coming from someone who says he has been with party since its inception.
Majumdar said current environment is not welcoming for people like him who identify as Hindu . In his interview,he said,"I am a Hindu and believe in God,that is why my conscience did not allow me to stay put with this party," and honestly, this line itself shows how personal this resignation has become for him.
And this resignation is coming at time when concerns around religious polarization inside party are already being discussed . Majumdar also pointed towards recent incidents of violence, including tragic case of postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College,as one big reason behind party’s electoral setbacks.
He also remarked,"Now reports of atrocities against Hindus are also coming in," suggesting that according to him, party has moved far away from its original values . Whether party agrees or not, this kind of public statement from state chief will obviously create noise.
Few things standing out clearly in this whole resignation:
- Electoral impact of Sherman Ali Ahmed — Majumdar criticized recent election success of Sherman Ali Ahmed ,saying it was not due to Trinamool's influence but because of his ties to areas with high Bangladeshi Muslim populations .
- Polarization tactics — He accused party leadership of using divisive strategies for political advantage, which he feels is bad for West Bengal and Assam.
- Personal reflection — Majumdar admitted joining Trinamool Congress was mistake and said there is need for party that represents all communities fairly .
And tbh, what makes this more serious is his claim that no party members are actively engaging in local office . That gives impression that issue is not only ideological, but also organizational on ground.
His departure may also point towards wider discontent among party workers who feel sidelined by current leadership’s focus on specific community interests . At same time, these are strong allegations and party will likely have its own version too.
But for Assam Trinamool Congress, this is definitely uncomfortable moment . When state chief himself walks out saying conscience did not allow him to stay, then question is simple but heavy… how many others inside party are thinking same thing silently?
