Voter list mistakes may look small on paper, but on voting day they become big headache only.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R.S. Gopalan said verification will run from May 30 until June 28 . Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will go door-to-door,meet electors, hand over enumeration forms and help people fill required details .
These forms will ask for personal information, family particulars and data linked to 2002 electoral rolls . And this part is important ah,because if names, ages or family details are wrong, people may not realise until election time comes.
Gopalan said whole idea is to avoid both wrong exclusions and wrong inclusions . His line was pretty direct: "We need to be vigilant to ensure that no eligible Indian voter is left out and that no ineligible person is included in the electoral roll."
Few dates people in Odisha should keep in mind:
- Door-to-door verification will happen from May 30 until June 28.
- Draft electoral roll will be published on July 5,and claims can be filed from July 5 to August 4.
- Final electoral roll publication is scheduled for September 6,2026.
During this verification,BLOs will also fix minor mistakes like spelling issues in names or age mismatch . Gopalan said many errors are not major and can be handled through field inquiry. As he explained,"Most of the logical errors are small, like discrepancy in age, discrepancy in name. These can be sorted out through just one Panchnama in a field inquiry,"
But if discrepancy is more serious, voters may be asked for supporting evidence . Still, absence of such evidence does not disqualify them from voting, which is a relief because many people may not have every paper ready at home.
For people who are away from home, family members can collect and sign enumeration forms on their behalf . There is also digital option where voters can download forms from Election Commission's website and submit them online. Help desks have also been set up for people who are confused or need guidance.
And scale of this exercise is not small at all . Odisha has 45,255 BLOs deployed across state, and these officers have been trained for this work . Another 33,000 Booth Level Agents are also being trained to support process.
Tbh,this kind of revision sounds routine, but it decides whether ordinary people smoothly vote or get stuck because of one small error somewhere . Now question is,whether this door-to-door push will actually reach every eligible voter before deadlines start closing in…
