On February 13, the Western Railway announced an expansion of its suburban train services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, set to take effect on February 19. This initiative includes the introduction of 12 new air-conditioned (AC) local train services along with three new non-AC services, reflecting the increasing popularity and demand for AC trains among commuters. The decision underscores the Western Railway's commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and convenience in the bustling city.
Officials indicated that the new AC services will effectively replace 11 existing non-AC services, thereby increasing the total number of AC local train services from 121 to 133. Additionally, the overall local train services will see an uptick from 1,410 to 1,414, providing commuters with more options and better service. This change aims to meet the rising expectations of passengers who prefer air-conditioned travel, especially during the warmer months.
- AC services increase significantly — Total AC services will rise from 121 to 133.
- Overall local train services expand — Total local services increase from 1,410 to 1,414.
- Weekend AC services boosted — AC services on Saturdays and Sundays increase from 77 to 106.
Moreover, a notable adjustment includes the rerouting of a slow local service that previously operated between Bhayandar and Bandra. This service will now originate from Virar, further optimizing the suburban network for daily commuters. Such changes aim to streamline operations and enhance the overall efficiency of the Western Railway system.
The introduction of these new services is expected to facilitate better connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, providing commuters with more comfortable travel options. The Western Railway continues to adapt to the evolving needs of its passengers, ensuring that the suburban train network remains a vital mode of transportation for millions of residents in the city.
