The massive anti-encroachment operation near Bandra East railway station intensified on May 21, with authorities confirming that 85% of the demolition work is now complete. This follows a day of high tension where a religious structure's removal sparked stone-pelting and a subsequent police lathi-charge. To prevent further unrest, a contingent of 1,200 security personnel has been stationed at the site.
CPRO Vineet Abhishek noted that the operation is progressing rapidly while keeping humanitarian concerns in mind. By Wednesday evening, only 60% of the work was finished, but heavy machinery has accelerated the process. The land being cleared is of immense commercial value, estimated to be worth nearly ₹600 crore, and is essential for railway infrastructure.
- Security forces on high alert — personnel from the Mumbai Police and Railway Protection Force are guarding the perimeter
- Legal action initiated — an FIR was filed at Nirmal Nagar Police Station against 10 identified people and a crowd of 150
- Infrastructure reclamation — the drive aims to clear 500 illegal structures from high-value railway land
The Mumbai Police took swift action following the violence in the Garib Nagar locality. Charges have been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against those who obstructed public servants. Officials clarified that no more religious structures are slated for demolition in this current phase, which should help de-escalate local anxieties.
Railway authorities emphasized that the drive is strictly about reclaiming public property. Vineet Abhishek stated, "We are ensuring that no one gets injured during the use of heavy machinery and are helping those facing genuine difficulties." The presence of Home Guards and local police continues to ensure that law and order remain stable as the final 15% of structures are removed.
