In a significant blow to organized drug syndicates, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has achieved a major conviction in the high-profile 2021 Mumbai Synthetic Drug Trafficking Case. A Special NDPS Court in Thane, Maharashtra, delivered a verdict that saw five key accused face severe penalties, marking a noteworthy step in the agency's aggressive campaign against narcotics networks operating within the financial capital. The NCB announced this development on their official social media channel.
The court sentenced Mohammed Arif Yaqoob Bhujwala, a resident of Chinchbunder, Mumbai, to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹2 lakh. Three other accused, including Parvez Khan alias Chinku Pathan and Mohammed Salman Khan, both from Chinchbunder, and Vikrant Jain from Bhiwandi, received five-year sentences and fines of ₹50,000 each. Additionally, Haris Faizullah Khan from Bandra West was sentenced to one year in prison with a ₹10,000 fine.
- Significant prison sentences — Key accused received long-term sentences for drug trafficking operations.
- Asset seizures over ₹6.5 crore — NCB attached assets linked to the convicted individuals, disrupting their operations.
- Comprehensive approach — NCB's strategy targets entire drug ecosystems, not just isolated operators.
The case originated in 2021 when NCB teams seized large quantities of synthetic drugs, including Mephedrone and Methamphetamine, along with precursor chemicals for manufacturing. Investigations uncovered a sophisticated network involved in extensive drug trafficking, money laundering, and illegal firearms possession. The operation illustrated the alarming intersection of narcotics trafficking with organized crime in urban Maharashtra.
This landmark conviction has been hailed as a testament to the NCB's effective strategy of dismantling entire drug ecosystems rather than focusing solely on individual operators. Officials noted that this approach aligns with the vision of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has consistently advocated for a robust crackdown on drug syndicates. The verdict serves as a clear warning to drug traffickers that their days of operating with impunity in Mumbai have come to an end.
