This Annapurna Yojana update from West Bengal is honestly one of those stories where scheme sounds helpful, but form process itself becomes headache for people . And now Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has announced on May 30 that government staff will help eligible women fill application forms.
Main concern seems to be 12-page application form . For many people, especially women who may not be comfortable with paperwork, this is not small thing ah . If financial support is meant for them, then process should not scare them away in first place.
And during media interaction at cervical cancer vaccination camp inauguration in Bidhannagar, near Kolkata,Adhikari tried to calm down whole confusion . He said,"There is no need to pay heed to the speculations and rumours over the complexities of filling Annapurna Yojana forms."
Under Annapurna Yojana, women in state are supposed to get monthly allowance of ₹3,000 . Government is saying genuine recipients, mainly eligible women, should receive this money without barriers . At same time,it also wants to stop ineligible persons from taking funds.
Few things standing out in this announcement:
- Home visits by government staff — will help women fill out application forms directly.
- First disbursement on June 3 — funds will be credited directly to beneficiaries' accounts.
- Increased monthly allowance — Annapurna Yojana offers ₹3,000 compared to previous schemes .
And tbh, this home visit idea can actually make difference if it is done properly . Because many schemes fail not because money is not there, but because people get stuck in documents, forms, office visits and confusion.
Annapurna Yojana is replacing earlier Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, which had faced criticism for including ineligible recipients . After assessment, state government reportedly found several males who had wrongly received benefits under previous scheme . That is why stricter application process has now come in.
But this is also where balance becomes tricky . If process becomes too strict, real women may struggle . If process becomes too loose, wrong people may again take benefit . Government is trying to walk that middle line rn.
First phase of disbursement is set to begin on June 3,and money will go directly into beneficiaries' accounts . Now real question is whether these home visits actually reach every eligible woman on time,or whether paperwork will again become bigger than scheme itself…
