Seven people losing lives in sudden thunderstorms on May 29,2026 is not small thing ah,especially when deaths came from lightning strikes, electrocution, and house collapses .
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that families of seven individuals who died will get ₹4 lakh each as compensation . Incidents were reported across Kolkata,Howrah,North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas .
But money in such cases always feels like very limited help . The Chief Minister also said deceased victims' bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and while speaking to media he said,"While no amount can truly compensate for loss of life,it is our responsibility to support the families of those affected by this natural calamity."
And that line is true also, because after such sudden death, family is left with shock, expenses, and so many unanswered things at same time . Government support matters, but it cannot replace person who went out or stayed home and never came back.
Few things clearly coming out from this announcement:
- ₹4 lakh compensation per victim will be given to support families of deceased due to thunderstorms.
- Injured victims from storms will also get financial aid, with focus on medical treatment .
- Situation is being monitored by dedicated team led by Minister Agnimitra Paul.
The thunderstorms were especially intense in South Bengal districts . In Kolkata, trees were uprooted and internet services got disrupted, which shows how fast normal life can get disturbed when norwesters hit without much warning .
Kolkata Municipal Corporation has activated emergency measures to clear roads of fallen trees and bring things back to normal . But reports also say rural regions were affected along with urban areas, and honestly, this is where disaster preparedness question becomes bigger.
Officials and staff of state disaster management department are on high alert now for any further emergencies . That sounds necessary rn,because after one such storm, people naturally start worrying about next one only .
And maybe that is uncomfortable part here . Compensation, medical treatment, road clearing, monitoring teams… all of this is needed, but when storms keep hitting both cities and villages like this, are we really ready before damage happens or only reacting after it…
